Current Initiatives
Improving Children’s Education
Across Malaysia, there are more than 16,000 refugee children who have no access to any education. Refugees here are not permitted to attend the local Malaysian schools. This is creating substantial education gaps that will continue to affect these children the rest of their lives.
In supporting Refugee Education, we come alongside those teaching refugees and provide mentoring, goal-setting, and professional development. Our hope is to grow and expand the effectiveness of teachers who are investing in the refugee children within Malaysia.
We also spend time in the classrooms with the children, teaching and encouraging and witnessing their resilience and desire to learn. We are also designing content specific to teacher mental health, teaching children in trauma, child protection, and education in emergency settings.
Vocational Education
We desire our students to be as prepared as possible to thrive in a dignified career and to take care of themselves and their families. Our training shop is a safe place for them to learn, grow, and develop their intrinsic potential while being cared for by a team who treats them well and honors who they are as individuals.
Through training in welding, manufacturing, woodwork and other trades skills, young refugee men are encouraged to expand their skill set to make themselves more marketable for future jobs.
Women’s support initiatives
Many young refugee women arrive into Malaysia uneducated and have experienced different levels of trauma. Our initiatives with women aim to help them discover that they are uniquely created and gifted.
We partner together for a perinatal program that offers prenatal classes, financial aid for undocumented mothers, labour support and post-birth support to many new mothers.
We are involved in various educational initiatives such as skills training and ESL classes for women, all while prioritizing relationship and visiting women in their homes.
